Daemon
In UNIX, a program running all the time in the "background" (that is, unseen by users), providing special services when required. An example of a daemon is biff, which lets you know when mail arrives.
Domain Name
A name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, a domain name can represent about a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URL's to identify particular Web pages.
Domain Name Owner
The person or organization which has legal ownership of the registered domain name.
Domain Name System (DNS)
An Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Domain names are alphabetic so they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.google.co.uk translates to 72.14.253.99 which can be typed into your browser's address bar to take you to that site.
