XML
Extensible Markup Language. An open standard for exchanging structured documents and data over the Internet that was introduced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in November 1996. XML is not a fixed set of elements like HTML; it is a metalanguage, or a language for describing languages. XML enables authors to define their own tags.
